Garbage Disposal Repair
We carry replacement units and repair parts on every service vehicle - most disposal problems are resolved in a single visit.
Get Same-Day Service
We use a multimeter to test motor winding continuity before recommending replacement. Many disposals others condemn are repairable.
A non-working disposal backs up your kitchen fast. We offer same-day service appointments throughout Watson and surrounding areas.
We carry popular replacement units on our service vehicles. If your disposal needs full replacement, we can install a new unit the same visit.
Every technician is licensed in AL and carries full liability insurance on all service calls, residential and commercial.
Proper Diagnosis First
A disposal that hums but won't spin is not the same as a disposal with no power at all. The humming-but-not-spinning scenario is the most common case where a simple reset button push is not enough. When a disposal hums without the grinding plate turning, it almost always means the impeller plate is physically jammed - not that the motor has failed. The motor is receiving power, energizing, and trying to run, but the mechanical load is too great for the capacitor to overcome. The solution is to use the hex key port at the bottom of the unit to manually rotate the grind plate and free the obstruction, followed by pressing the thermal overload reset button. If the disposal hums but the grind plate cannot be freed manually, the impeller or flywheel is bent or the motor shaft is seized - at that point the unit typically requires replacement.
The no-power scenario is frequently misdiagnosed. When a disposal has no power and makes no sound at all, the reset button is the right first step. But if the reset button has already been tried and the unit still does not respond, the next step is not a new disposal - it is a multimeter test at the outlet and at the disposal wiring harness. Capacitor failures are common in disposals that are 8 to 12 years old. The capacitor is a small component that provides the starting current surge to get the motor spinning. A failed capacitor leaves the motor unable to start despite the windings being perfectly intact. In many units, replacing the capacitor restores full function for a fraction of the cost of a new disposal.
Bottom leaks deserve special attention because they are routinely misrepresented as a plumbing connection problem. When water exits from the very bottom of the disposal housing - not from the side drain connection, not from the dishwasher inlet, but from the lowest point of the motor housing itself - the source is the internal motor seal. This is a factory seal between the upper grinding chamber and the lower motor housing, and it is not serviceable in the field. A bottom-leaking disposal needs replacement, not repair. The water you see at the bottom is traveling through the motor windings - attempting to operate a bottom-leaking disposal after discovering the leak can cause electrical damage beyond the disposal itself.
The three items most commonly jammed in a disposal that customers rarely mention to their plumber: avocado pits (extremely hard, will bend the impeller plate), artichoke leaves (fibrous strands wrap around the grind ring and create a matted obstruction that a simple reset will not resolve), and broken glass (typically from a dropped item in the sink that someone forgot to remove before running the disposal). Each requires a different clearing approach. Avocado pits and glass must be physically removed - running the disposal will worsen both situations. Artichoke fiber must be cleared by hand from the grind chamber after power is disconnected.
Finally, the continuous feed vs. batch feed question matters significantly for households with children. A continuous feed disposal runs whenever its wall switch is activated, which means it runs while loading food waste. A batch feed disposal requires a stopper to be inserted and turned to activate - it will not run with the drain open. For households where children have access to the kitchen sink, batch feed units are a meaningful safety upgrade. They also tend to be quieter because they run with the stopper inserted, which dampens sound transmission. The trade-off is slightly lower throughput for large volumes of food waste.
What We Fix and Install
From a quick jam clearing to a full high-torque unit upgrade, our licensed plumbers handle every disposal need on a single visit.
We test motor winding continuity and capacitor function with a multimeter before recommending replacement. This catches repairable units that others condemn prematurely, and correctly identifies units that are beyond economical repair.
We disconnect power, manually free the grind plate with the hex wrench port, remove the obstructing material from the grind chamber, and reset the thermal overload before testing the unit through a full cycle.
We confirm whether a bottom leak is from the internal motor seal or from a side connection before recommending replacement. If replacement is indicated, we remove the old unit, update the drain connection if needed, and install and test the new unit same-day.
New disposal installations require the dishwasher drain inlet knockout plug to be removed before connecting the dishwasher drain hose. We confirm this step is complete on every installation - a blocked knockout plug is one of the most common post-installation problems.
We remove an existing continuous feed unit and install a batch feed model for households that prefer the added safety of stopper-activation, particularly families with children who use the kitchen sink. We supply the replacement unit and handle all electrical connections.
We upgrade undersized or aging disposals to commercial-grade high-torque units (1 HP or greater) for households that frequently process fibrous vegetables, hard shells, or high food waste volumes. Upgraded units reduce jam frequency and improve drain throughput.
Our Process
Tell us what your disposal is doing - we ask about the symptom specifically so our technician arrives with the right parts and tools for your most likely failure mode.
We test power at the outlet, check the reset button state, use a multimeter on the winding and capacitor, and manually assess the grind plate - before touching a single connection.
We give you a flat rate for the appropriate repair, and a separate replacement quote if the unit is beyond repair. You choose - no pressure either direction.
We complete the repair or installation, run the unit through multiple test cycles with water running, verify the drain connection is tight, and confirm no leaks before we leave.
What Clients Say
“My disposal was humming and not spinning. I had already tried the reset button three times. Their tech used the hex wrench from the bottom, cleared an avocado pit I didn't even know was in there, and had it running in 15 minutes.”
“Water was coming from the very bottom of my disposal. They explained exactly what a bottom seal failure meant and why repair wasn't worth it, then installed a new unit same day. Very professional and clear.”
“Upgraded to a 1 HP unit after years of constant jams with the cheap builder-grade disposal. Night and day difference. Should have done it years ago. Installation was quick and clean.”
